Fort Drum soldier fatally shot in Syracuse: A 19-year-old from Georgia who was killed in Syracuse Monday night has been identified as Malik Sharif Shipman, an Army solider stationed at Fort Drum. Shipman was shot in the midsection in the 300 block of Parkway Drive late on July 4, police said.

Will aquarium vote happen? Onondaga County legislators met Tuesday without mentioning plans for an $85 million aquarium in Syracuse, a sign that County Executive Ryan McMahon still has not convinced a majority of lawmakers to vote for the project he proposed nine months ago. Some legislators have expressed adamant opposition, but others are waiting for more information about projected operating costs or how an aquarium would mesh with other local amenities, such as a proposed sports complex.

Van Duyn owners’ side businesses reaped $10M profit from nursing home chain: The owners of Van Duyn nursing home reaped a $10 million profit in 2020 providing management and other services to Van Duyn and 16 other New York nursing homes they own, according to a new report. Van Duyn and seven of the homes lost money in 2020, but the chain posted an overall profit of $1.7 million and Efraim Steif and Uri Koenig made nearly six times more money than that from their companies that do business with their nursing homes.

Late-night dining option comes to Syracuse: At a time when many restaurants are closing earlier than normal due to staffing and other issues, the Baghdad Restaurant and the Salt City Bar at the Salt City Market will open from 9:30 p.m. to midnight this weekend, filling a void for late-night dining in downtown Syracuse.

Onondaga County to send senior citizens $200 if they qualify for Enhanced STAR: Lawmakers unanimously approved a payment of $200 to every senior citizen in the county who qualifies for the Enhanced STAR property tax exemption.
